Spring is my favourite time of year in Portugal.
It always seems to start early here with the green grass emerging and lambs being born.
Portugal is a beautiful country but particularly beautiful during the spring time. With milder weather it is a great time to get out and about and explore, especially with the kids.
Spring in Portugal is a time when the countryside is in full bloom. The hills are covered with wildflowers and the almond and cherry trees are in blossom, creating a colourful and picturesque landscape. Stunning! And of course if you are out and about exploring the beautiful country, its ideal as it is less busy then during the summer season. I don’t know about you but I prefer uncrowded places.
Spring is a time when many festivals and events take place in Portugal, such as the Lisbon Fish and Flavours Festival and the Porto Wine Fest. In Ourique we have the black pig fair which is a huge event for a tiny town. These events showcase the best of Portuguese culture and cuisine.
Although the water might be too cold for swimming (for me in particular), the beaches are still a great place to relax and soak up the sun in spring. Saying that, this spring has been a bit warmer than usual and many people having been having a dip. You will find fewer people on the beach, which means more space to enjoy the scenery and tranquility. It’s the perfect place to do a bit of yoga. A great way to start or even end your day!
Easter is an important holiday in Portugal and visitors can experience the country’s unique celebrations during this time. From religious processions to traditional food, Easter in Portugal is a fascinating cultural experience.
It is also a great time to go whale watching in Portugal. The coastal waters of the Azores are home to several species of whales, including blue whales, humpback whales, and sperm whales. On the main land coast you are more likely to meet some dolphins and maybe a orca or two.
Best of all it is a cheap time of year to fly. Flight prices are far less expensive than in the summer time – allowing my family to visit and gives me the opportunity to show them Portugal and enjoy a coffee and a Pastel da Nata 🙂
